Horse Protection Initiatives Program Launched
Kelowna, B.C.: TRACS (The Responsible Animal Care Society) has found a way to help keep horses off the table and in the stable.
Each year, close to 100,000 horses die in Canadian slaughterhouses. 2008 was a record year, with over 112,000 horses entering the slaughter pipeline from a variety of directions, including industry breeding operations (e.g. racing and Pregnant Mare Urine farms), closed trail riding businesses, and rodeos. Perhaps the saddest cases of all occur when family horses and ponies are sent to auction in the hope that they will find good homes. Many of these horses, once loved, end up in feedlots. The animals are then transported to one of five equine slaughter plants in Canada, and their meat is sold to consumers in Europe and Asia.
In an effort to help at-risk horses, TRACS has developed a program called Horse Protection Initiatives. We are providing adoption incentives by working collaboratively with qualified rescue centres, and we offer humane euthanasia assistance for elderly, lame or otherwise suffering horses (in order to spare them the hardships of long distance transport and slaughter).
Thus, we are offering a 30-second broadcast-quality PSA to community channels so that information about our program might be disseminated across Canada, enabling more horses to be spared from suffering. May we send you our PSA for viewing and telecast? Created by Media Button in Kelowna, this announcement is professionally crafted and respectful of sensitive viewers.
