About this user

I create. I capture moments. In photographs, as well as in words. As a photojournalist, I use tools - a camera and a computer -- in order to freeze-frame short-lived instants in time. To make sure they are remembered long after the passing of the actual moment. There's duality, a shit-load of it, in fact, as the image I capture utterly depends on where I point my camera. And the words I write depend on my mood, my state of mind, my rapport with my subject, my agony and my ecstasy. But I'm more craftsman than artist, and busting my gut goes hand in hand with that occasional flash of blinding insight.

The Guts: I am a pro photographer/author who regularly contributes to a wide selection of premium adventure-, travel- and outdoor magazines, both in SA and abroad. Leading titles include Runners World, Bicycling, Discovery Magazine, Time Out & Men's Health. As a columnist for a range of newspapers, my photographs and articles are regularly published in newspapers and on web sites around the world.

The Glory: I've shot and authored numerous outdoor titles for publishers around the world and am currently working on an Adrenalin Guide to southern Africa. My short stories feature in an adventure anthology and, as an accredited RED BULL and Land Rover photographer, I shoot global extreme events, covering disciplines as diverse as FMX, adventure racing, DH mountain biking, snowboarding and wilderness expeditioning. During the acclaimed ILLUME Red Bull Sports Photography Awards, I was honoured as a TOP 50 finalist from a field of well over 20 000 international shooters. Most recent honours include both a Gold and Silver Award in the respected SONY Profoto Awards.

The Grit: I shoot on pro Canon DSLRS, and have built up an extensive library of images which I supply to ad agencies, stock libraries (I am an accredited GETTY photographer) and production houses around the globe. As Jacques Marais Media, I also coordinate media- & marketing projects for premium adventure sport companies & related organisations, and my current client list include Nike, Nissan, Land Rover, CapeStorm, Red Bull, Maserati & Ferrari.
