About Me:

I am a big RUSH fan and like everything about the band - the musicianship, the songs and lyrics, the live performances and the fact that they've achieved incredible success entirely on their own terms.
I spent countless hours in my teens and early twenties trying my best to learn these songs note for note.
I recently dusted off my basses and revisited some of my favorites.

It's been a little over a year since I posted my first video so I thought I'd take a moment to update my page.

My intention, when starting this project, was to post 10-15 of my favorite RUSH songs. Well, things seem to have gotten a bit out of hand with over 80 RUSH covers posted to date. It appears as though I'm a bigger RUSH fan than I thought.

Most of the songs I already knew and just needed to throw a bit of polish on. A lesser number of songs I knew in part and had to put a fair amount of work into in order to get them to the point where I could play them straight through with a reasonable degree of confidence. The remaining 10-15 songs were learned entirely from scratch (in most cases suggestions or requests) and these were the songs that required the greatest amount of work and were the most challenging to record.

Also, you may have noticed that I don't do many covers of material recorded after the "Roll The Bones" album and there are two reasons for this. One is that around that time I was really focused on writing, playing and recording my own original music and got away from learning other people's material - even the music of RUSH (though I still bought/listened to their music and attended their concerts). The second reason is that at that time Geddy dramatically changed his playing style by incorporating his, now famous, back and forth with the fingers-flamenco technique and I never put the time or effort into learning that method of playing.

Equipment

Rickenbacker 4003 with a Hipshot direct replacement bridge and Pickgaurdian Bridge Pickup Plate.

Fender "Geddy Lee" Model Jazz Bass

Musicman Stingray 5 String

Fender SP-10 guitar practice amp

Kodak Zi8 Camera - The reason I purchased this camera was because it was the only one in its class (fairly inexpensive) that had an external microphone input.

An old external microphone that came with my first computer back in 1999 - a Dell with an 8 gig hard drive - woo-hoo.

Recording

My method of recording is quite simple and untechnical. My little amp sits on the desk to my left along with my computer speakers. The external microphone is run from the camera and sits just a few inches away from the amp. My computer speakers sit to the side of my amp facing toward the microphone. I play my bass at a very low level - from where I sit, it's barely audible above the music. I usually do a take or two, check the mix and adjust by raising or lowering the volume of the bass or by moving the microphone closer or further to/from the amp.

Subscribers

I am flattered, honored and quite surprised to have this many people subscribe to my channel - 575 at this point.
I am humbled by all the positive comments, encouragement , support and general camaraderie that presents itself to me through my channel on a daily basis. While I am appreciative of each subscriber; it is these things that I am thankful for. I shouldn't be terribly surprised as I've always found RUSH fans, in general, to be a very good natured group of people - tolerant and giving, loyal and kind.

I make my best effort to thank each new subscriber and respond to each and every comment, as not receiving a reply to a comment (even if it's a simple thank you) is a pet peeve of mine. So, non-responders be warned.

I've become acquainted with many wonderful people through YouTube, too many to mention for fear of leaving someone out...with one exception. And that would be Valerie/Vineyardedge/Bassplayergirl whose gracious generosity in featuring a bunch of my videos on her channel exposed me to a much wider audience than I would have been if left to my own devices. Thanks Val.

Props to Kahme/EntustinMeYourLife as well.

Demonstrations/Tutorials

I look forward to doing demonstrations/tutorials on some of the RUSH songs I've covered. I've put much time, effort, and energy into figuring out these songs as faithfully to the source material as I possibly could and would feel honored to pass along whatever tips, knowledge and techniques I can to anyone who's interested. The only problem is that, while I consider myself to be, by nature, a fairly analytical person, I am not analytical at all when it comes to my own playing. Maybe it comes from being self-taught, but, simply put - "I do what I do" - and have great difficulty putting it into words (and I envy those with that ability). To me, it would be like trying to explain to someone how to breathe or walk - if you can relate to that. Anyway, I'll try not to let that stop me from doing "tutorials" which will be more "slowed down demonstration" than tutorial.

I play bass guitar and enjoy both listening to and playing music. I also collect latex masks, horror props and Dark Art as well as make my own large scale figures, props and set pieces. My wife, Lynn, and I host a serious Halloween party and each year try our best to go all out with a new set design/theme. We have six cats, Willow, Mr. Butter, Marcus, Simon McGee, Briscoe Kitty Jr., and his brother Bowler and have to work pretty hard to keep them well supplied with food, litter, and things to destroy.

Hey man. First of all great freakin videos. I've been playing bass for a bit over a year now and Ive been playing a squire j bass. I'm able to play more difficult stuff such as La Villa and my band is starting to play small gigs so I want to upgrade. I feel no reason in buying a mim J bass because I would probably upgrade from that quickly. Im not sure if I should just get a MIA Jazz bass or a Geddy Lee J Bass. Although I love playing Rush in my free time, with my band I mostly play funk/jazz music and I dont know if the Geddy would sound good for stuff like that. Also what strings do you use. Thanks, rushmaniac15

Hey Troy, I was wondering if maybe some day you can make a tutorial of sort about how you learn a new song. Not step by step, but more like tips on how you keep track of what you know, what to listen for, things like that. I know you learn all of these songs by ear, and I really hope to some day be able to do that myself.
