Established in 1920, The University of Southern Mississippi Symphony Orchestra is the oldest orchestra in Mississippi. It has been under the direction of music director Dr. Jay Dean since 1988. Dedicated to creating world-class and life-changing opportunities for its members, the orchestra has become a well-established musical leader in the state and region and lives up to its motto "bringing the world to Mississippi" by performing with internationally known artists, from Plácido Domingo, Itzhak Perlman, Yo-Yo Ma, and Sir James Galway, to Doc Severinsen, Ray Charles, Patti LaBelle, and Dionne Warwick to name a few. Further, the symphony is truly an international organization with more than 14 countries represented by its students. The Southern Mississippi Symphony Orchestra is one of the most exciting orchestras in the South.
