@ajs41 Well actually most major party leaders used to do that. Harold Wilson used to go out and speak in the streets and was excellent with hecklers! Alec Douglas Home also used to do the same although he was less good. It really changed in the 1970's when Heath and Thatcher brought in the ad men...
