About this user
Susmit Sen , the name resounds scales , notes and moods across the ears of various music lovers in India and across the world. But perhaps what the name resounds most, is an act of faith. Faith in the sheer simplicity of music and yet its ability to reach deeper than perhaps any other form of expression. Faith in being able to find meaning in a moment of poise Faith in the image of a man , placed on a stage with pursed lips , speaking very little but saying a lot.
Susmit Sen , is the founder member of India's leading Band Indian Ocean , an impeccable guitar player but before any of that , a musician.
Essentially self-taught, he has virtually invented a new style of playing the guitar. His guitar playing forms one of the most fundamental signatures of the band , Indian Ocean , where the purity of scales reign much like the style which forms the basis of Indian classical music. A form, where there is greater freedom of expression through varied note selections yet a disciplinary restriction of never leaving the realm of those notes.
His performances often leave audiences gasping at his sheer mastery over the instrument, his impeccable choice & placement of notes.
Susmit's personal vision is towards finding a new vocabulary for his music, beyond the existing & oft-repeated formats. He has been deeply influenced by Masters of Indian Classical music. In Susmit's own words, he was fortunate enough to have been able to see some of the greatest musicians of Indian Classical Music perform at their peak. Deeply mesmerized by their simplicity and depth, and yet not knowing much about the technicalities of music, Susmit had started to focus on the personality behind the music , to realize soon enough that technical mastery does not necessarily translate to musical expression.
The meditative quality that Susmit admired as a youth, gradually began to seep into his own music as many of his fans will unflinchingly testify.
Some of his early compositions such as Brisk Lonely Walk, Melancholic ecstasy and No Comebacks have already become part of musical folklore in India.
These are compositions that have not only defined ' music of the roots' to a younger generation of Indians but in many ways have captured the very contradiction that makes this culture what it is. The co existence of modernity and a living breathing tradition. The co --existence of faith and reason. The presence of free flowing music within a structure.
Susmit Sen's music in its time has formed part of an entire generation of Indians that have literally grown up through school and college days on his music. A reassuring sound of modern India, that is not coloured by being exotic. An expression of not only innovating but of refinding tradition.....
