correct, in the early days the cars did have an onboard starter, however for the last 30 years or so they have to be started this way because there is no onboard starter motor. even in the times of turbo normally aspirated cars were started this way, and all F1 cars are started this way ...

30 years ago it was pale make up, he used to use MaxFactor PanSticks, because he had acne and wanted to cover it. It did suit him so well though because of the sort of music he was doing. But come on, he don't look bad really. you have to remember in 1979, he was only 21.
