About Me:
Early years. Rolando spent his early childhood in the town of La Lisa in Havana. Like most Cuban children, he was brought up in an environment in which music and tradition played very important roles. His early years, like any normal child, where spent amongst family, friends, play, and schoolwork. It is during these years that he learned the basic principles of love and family values. His aptitude for the arts and especially for music grew with him as he learned music theory and piano. At the age of 15, he played the main role in a school production of the classic Romeo and Juliet.
A new home. Like many Cubans, the day came when it was necessary to leave the mother-country in search of a new beginning. In 1987, Rolando and his family left Havana for the United States of America. He lived in the Atlanta metropolitan area in Georgia for several months, and then moved to Miami, Florida. His struggles were not any different from those endured by any other Cuban immigrant. The difference, however, he marked with his strong love for music. Singing was the means to keep the spirit alive and maintain focus on any endeavor he took on. He graduated from the Barbizon School of Modeling in Miami, and was active in community dancing groups and choirs.
Leap into the arts. As years passed, Rolando's interest in singing increased and he turned his focus into the lyrical world. In year 2000, he entered a voice competition held in Toronto, Canada. His outstanding performance landed him the opportunity to pursue formal studies at the Conservatorio Superior de Salamanca, at the Escuela Superior de Canto de Madrid, and at El Liceo in Barcelona, Spain. During his stay in Barcelona, he completed course work in Italian Opera offered by the Concurso Internacional de Canto Francisco Viñas.
Upon his return to Miami, Rolando's passion for both music and acting found common ground in the Opera, the Spanish Zarzuela, and the musical theater. His experience in the lyrical music arena includes the roles of Alfredo in La Traviata and Duke Danilo in The Merry Widow, as well as his participation in the Spanish zarzuelas La Dolorosa, Luisa Fernanda, and Los gavilanes produced by the Opera Studio USA Company. With Miami's Proarte Gratelli, he performed in Doña Francisquita; and with PPTOPA, he interpreted the role of Luntha in the musical The King and I. He was Fredrik in the operetta The Pirate of Pensance also produced by PPTOPA. He also participated in several recitals produced by the group L'Opera Nostra.
In addition, he served as Choral Master for both the Adult and Children Choirs at the Saint Dominic Catholic Parish and as the leading singer in the choral ensemble of Metropolitan Community Church of Miami.
The present and view into the future. Rolando juggles his time between being an opera singer, a music and voice instructor, and an entertainer. He is an active member of the Florida Grand Opera Chorus in which he performs as a tenor. He has already participated in several of their seasons, offering key support in classics such as Pagliacci and Carmen. As an entertainer, he has proven to be similarly talented, singlehandedly producing a recital he entitled La Promessa that filled to capacity a popular entertaining venue in the Calle Ocho arts and cultural district in Miami. He is now working on his next recital Il Mondo. Rolando is determined to keep music and art in general leading his journey into the future.
Today he is working with a great soprano, Hilda del Castillo.
