MOMBIT KOMBIT KAAMATAN
Mombit Kombit meaning 'To Pinch' or 'Cubit-Cubitan' in Malay is a folk song written a long time ago by Ambrose Mudi as Kada Do Mombit Kombit. Ambrose Mudi is Malaysia's first Dusun Singer to hit the silver screens of RTM Radio & TV back in the 60s. This very popular tribal drinking song which is a flirtatious in nature was very popular in the 70's.
In the 90's it was remade by Peter Dicky Lee in follow up to his 'Iziau,Iziau,Iziau' hit record. Kada Do Mombit Kombit became some sort of a controversy in RTM which could not get regular airplay due to its flirtatious party message. However, Peter Dicky was adamant to get it broadcasted in other streams.
Since then Peter had released " I'm Back! " in 2008.
It was in April 2011 that Peter Dicky Lee expressed his wish to do another remake of this Ambrose Mudi's original and so Peter decided to produce it with Atama Katama, real name Andrew Ambrose Mudi (the son of the original composer) and so Peter contacted the controversial producer.
By this time, Andrew had already been in controversies with the state minister of culture and found himself scolding the paramount leader of the KadazanDusun for social & politics abuses of the native people. Even being labeled as a rebel by the politicians and hidden hands, Atama had already planned a new strategy purveying another new sound to his arsenal of music production creativity. His last endevour was Tribal-Reggaeton-Soul-Hiphop with 'Bakakuk" released in 2009 on Amazon.com & Itunes.
So as Peter, Atama & Ambrose had lunch to finalize this project over sweet & sour chicken and black pepper lamb at Arriva; there was a sudden gush of energy as the three legends (in their own right) agreed.
Two weeks later, Atama dropped the track; which was heavily influenced by Electro-HipHop vibes and previewed it to Peter. (A day earlier, Atama dropped Electro Lepa on Vimeo) They then headed to Refuge Studios (owned by Jonathan Tse) and spent 2hours to record the track.
Before the recording, a young Kadazan beauty was in the studio finishing her own recording. Jonathan Tse introduced her as Joanna Quintin, the next big star. Peter, looking rather surprised but eager asked her to drop her voice in the chorus which later turned out almost magical!
Flash forward to 23rd May, Charles Phang an incredible video director came to Refuge Studio to shoot the Video. The concept was 'the making of'. It was learnt that Mombit Kombit Kaamatan is the first of many remakes.
"Mombit Kombit Kaamatan is specially produced for the celebrants of Harvest Festival 2011. Call it an 'Exclusive'." said Atama who continued with.. "There are 20tracks that I will be producing to follow this up and I will produce another Mombit Kombit - 'In The Club' version with the 'real' music video in June. This will happen as a snowball till next Harvest".
The combination of the Veteran, the Rebel and the next biggest thing is remarkably a fantastic collaboration. What more with the pulsating & infectious groove of modern Dusun music crafted by Atama.
Peter describes this collaboration as a match made in SabahanPopVille and is looking forward to the next project-track with the rebel producer on a Chinese pop song intended to be remixed for release in Taiwan, Hong Kong & China market.
But for now, Mombit Kombit is sure to give us some good vibes, perhaps all year long. Who would have thought that Sabah's artisans tireless efforts would make unite every free & sovereign Sabahan in the joy of Kaamatan.
To be a man in the spotlight and shotdown in the national press, labeled as childish by the minister of culture, called an anti-government by a yb from Kota Belud, police reports made against a 'figment of his imagination', his father presumed ' the late' by the same yb and even accused by a tan sri as destroying the native culture by a regular columnist on a predominant daily newspaper....Atama surely "is doing something better" for his people; a thing that many politicians and ministers can't do - which is make to sweet music for their ears, dancing on their feet & good feelings in their hearts.
Kotobian Tadau Tagazo Do Kaamatan to All!
