I started training Remy a few weeks ago - he knows Come, Spin, Up, and just learned Paw today. I'm also training his cagemates but he's the fastest learner. :) == 12/11/09 - Remy died from pneumonia at only a year and a half old (middle age for a rat). He wouldn't come out to play one day, stopped eating the next day, and that night we took him to the vet and he died there.
Remington was the smartest (cutest softest) rat I ever had. We picked him out because he seemed different than all the other babies in the rat pile.
Remy had his fair share of struggles in life - weaned far too early and always a bit sneezy, he was on Baytril for three weeks as a little guy and then had to be treated for lice for several weeks! He grew up to be a beautiful sleek rat who on one occasion got sat on and was limpy for a week and on another occasion got a toenail caught and bled all over my couch. He barely seemed to notice these mishaps, and would keep running around my apartment looking imploringly at me for Yogies.
We buried him in the yard and planted flowers over him. The cage seems a bit sad as I still pull out three treats and am left with one treat in my hand after Caesar and Napoleon get their due.
Hope this video helps some people to see what wonderful pets rats can be despite their short lifespans.

This video shows some of the tricks I have been working on recently with Kiko and Splash. Some of the more interesting ones are, teaching Splash to look left and look right, teaching her how to skip, and how to shuffle backwards in a bow. Kiko started offering a tap dancing behavior which I captured, as well as scratching with her back feet. I also taught Kiko to go between Splashes legs as I saw a Boston Terrier do in the movie Hotel for Dogs, and thought it would be very cute to teach. Splash however, looks stressed as you can see, when kiko works too closely around her, because Kiko usually will boss Splash around if she is too close to her.
All these tricks were taught using clicker training and no forms of positive punishment (meaning me saying No! or eh eh! Wrong! Or any physical manipulation)
