"Labayka Allahuma Labayk [Here I am, Oh God, here I am]," said the man whom was once called "Satan" in prison. Having arrived at the geographical destination of his ritual pilgrimage (Hajj) to Mecca, Malcolm X had traveled a longer life journey to get there. This presentation, given by Zaheer Ali, will trace his faith journey from Malcolm Little to El Hajj Malik Shabazz, examining the significant turning points as well as life-long continuities that propelled his evolutionary development.
About Zaheer Ali:
Under the direction of the late Manning Marable, Zaheer Ali served as one of the project managers and senior researchers of the Malcolm X Project (MXP) at Columbia University, a multi-year research initiative on the life and legacy of Malcolm X. As project manager, he was associate editor of an online annotated multimedia version of The Autobiography of Malcolm X (2004), and later contributed as a lead researcher to Marable's New York Times best-seller and National Book Award finalist Malcolm X: A Life of Reinvention (2011). This spring (2012), he is teaching a course entitled "Malcolm X: A Life of (R)Evolution" at The City College of New York. He is currently a doctoral student in history at Columbia University, where he is focusing his research on twentieth-century African-American history and religion. His dissertation examines the history of the Nation of Islam's Temple/Mosque No. 7 in Harlem, New York, from 1954-1965. More information can be found at: www.zaheerali.com
