About Me:
"What does this cross mean?"
I'll tell you. Christ is the King of Kings and the Lord of Lords, who has always existed with God the Father, and who has always been, in essence, God.
In the Gospel of John, He is said to be "the Word." This Word was "with God, and the Word *was* God."
Hold on - He was with God, yet He was God? Why, yes!
Now, why did He come? He came to save us from our sins - in fact, He *died* for the sins of those chosen by God, once and for all.
You may have heard of the story of Adam and Eve (found in Genesis, the first book of the Bible). In it, God is said to have (before He created Adam and Eve of course) "created the heavens and the earth" in the beginning.
Now, He put two trees in the garden: one, the tree of life; the other, the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. The serpent tempted Eve to eat of the fruit - she would become "like God" if she did." Adam did not discourage her, but instead followed along.
(Now, hold on - why would God allow this? Well, we'll see in a second.)
All of mankind was cursed because of their actions. This event is known as "The Fall." Within it, at the beginning of mankind, there is a prophecy:
"I will put enmity between you and the woman,
and between your offspring and her offspring;
he shall bruise your head,
and you shall bruise his heel."
Who was to bruise the serpent's head? The offspring of Adam and Eve. Who was this referring to, ultimately? The Messiah. Who is the Messiah?
Jesus.
Go back to the Gospel of John. Notice something?
What does Genesis 1:1 say?
"In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth."
Now, what does John 1:1 say?
"In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God."
God *knew* that the Fall would happen all along. He perfectly orchestrated it so that Adam and Eve would indeed "Fall." Why? So that He could save us, and so that in it He would be glorified (Isaiah 43:1-7).
So, the Word was in the beginning with God, and, as God the Son, He created the heavens and the earth (John 1:3, Hebrews 1:10).
This Creator, the very one who gives us life (Hebrews 1:3), in whom we all, not just believers, move and have our being, came to earth in the flesh, preached that He is salvation, was crucified, and rose again in three days.
Where is He now?
He is at the right hand of God the Father.
Now, this is all wonderful - but there's a dilemma. We are sinners. We have nothing good in our flesh. We are lost, we are in the dark, we are blind without Christ.
How can I be with Him?
Call on the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of God, the Messiah, and you will be saved.
Mark 10:45
"For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many." (NIV)
"If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. If I give all I possess to the poor and surrender my body to the flames, but have not love, I gain nothing. Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away. For we know in part and we prophesy in part, but when perfection comes, the imperfect disappears. When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I put childish ways behind me. Now we see but a poor reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known. And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love. (1 Corinthians 13:1-13)"
