I have two chippers; one is an MTD Yard Machine, and the other is a Patriot. The MTD works kind of like yours in that you have to push your work into the knives. The Patriot, on the other hand is set up a little differently and it will self feed the work into the knives (no feeding mechanism, either). The main difference between the two machines is the angle the work is fed into it. If you're the handyman you appear to be, you can easily modify your machine to do the work for you by tilting the chute downward (flatter).
