About Me:
When I started to break, there were many obstacles in my path. At first, the members of the bboy club were eager to teach me their basic skills, but as time flew by, they saw that I was a slow learner and told me to quit before I embarrassed myself. I continued to attend their afterschool practices, and one day, a member of the club announced: If your name is Steven, go home. Stop trying, because you fail. I was humiliated.
As I walked home from school, tired and mortified by the fact that the bboy club hated me, I thought to myself: If I fail at the smallest things in life, like learning how to breakdance, then how can I ever succeed? After thinking about this subject throughout the entire day, I decided that from that day on, I would practice as much and rigorously as I could to prove them wrong.
As the weeks and months went by, I finally learned the basic techniques. I would practice every Sunday with my closest friends from Vietnamese school. Together we formed a crew called Sloppy Stylez Krew. We were consisted of many newcomers, with no distinct talent, but we all shared something in common, the passion and love for dancing, and we all strived further to improve our abilities.
The following year, I returned to the bboy clubs afterschool practice sessions. There, I met my archrival, the member that tormented me last year. Surprisingly, he had heard about my crew, and thought of me as a joke, to the point that I snapped. I challenged him to a dance battle, which he accepted and we set arranged a date.
The battle day arrived, I was very hyped up and motivated to win. The location was at school, with a crowd of around 100-200 people. I started off the battle attempting a crazy stunt. I fell flat on my face, and everyone in the crowd, including my archrival started to boo. But as I stood up, I heard a distant sound and looked over to see my crew cheering me on. I knew I had to win, and represent them. I executed the rest of my moves perfectly, doing some of my signature moves. After the final round, the judges declared that I was the winner. The crowd stood up and applauded and I felt respected for the first time in my breakdancing career. Although there was no prize involved, I was compensated by the pride and joy of my crew.
In the end, I am exceptionally proud of what Ive done. To learn a new skill took persistence and determination. To perform or battle took courage and hours of hard work. But if this chapter in my life never occured, I wouldve never learned that nothing comes with ease, and that if I can succeed in small categories like breakdancing, then by all means, I can surely succeed in life.
