Another method of control. Keep people too preoccupied with "making ends meet" and they won't have time to worry about an authoritarian government. They'll also seek an escape, and for this they'll have loads of mind-melting distractions: lurid television programs, useless internet videos, violence and sex-filled movies, pop culture and celebrity worship. Hardly anybody wants to resist it.

Bomb-making (just kidding, FBI men), distributing communist leaflets, volunteering, reading, writing, thinking, Iowa's secession from the Union, bringing the human population growth rate to negative figures
Movies:
While our boys overseas slaughter dirty, brown people, Americans watch television, go to the movies, buy new cars and new electronic gadgets, and otherwise focus only on themselves. Don't worry about starving children, or about having all your communications collected by the government, or about toxic poisons being dumped into our air and water, or about children being brainwashed to fit in and get by. Just sit back and enjoy all the fun amusements our society offers. USA! USA! USA! Fight them there so we don't fight them here! They hate our freedom! Bush kept us safe! (not including 9/11) War is peace! Freedom is slavery! Ignorance is strength!
