Pierre, South Dakota: Pierre is pronounced "Pier" as in the pier along the Missouri River where the town is located instead of nearby Fort Pierre named after an American Fur trader. South Dakotans and educators across the country would appreciate this error being fixed. Thank you.

The capital of South Dakota is pronounced "peer" or "pier" (same pronounciation) since it's along the Missouri River. Fort Pierre was named after a fur trader, Pierre Chouteau Jr. Since less than 1% of South Dakotans are of French speaking origins, we say "Pier". Thank you for fixing this mistake...
