Special Episodes Play

Every once in a while, we like to do something a bit different from our usual reviews. All of these special episodes are collected here.

Strategy Games Play

Our strategy game reviews. Strategy games are often referred to as Euro games due to the German origins of the first games in this genre to become popular in North America, such as Settlers of Catan and Carcassonne. Strategy games have traditionally emphasized elegant game mechanics, long-term strategy and indirect competition over theme and storytelling, and are usually geared towards family play. The genre has expanded greatly in the past 10 years, and many modern strategy games incorporate their theme very well and offer new twists on the classics.

Thematic Games Play

Our thematic game reviews.

Thematic board games have their origins in classic American games from publishers such as Avalon Hill that emphasized a strong theme, dramatic conflict, and storytelling. Thematic games tend to have a higher element of luck than traditional strategy games, and use their mechanics to bring out thematic elements, rather than as a vehicle for clean, well-balanced play. Many recent additions to the genre bring to life the worlds of popular series such as A Game of Thrones and Battlestar Galactica while offering complex strategy and innovative mechanics.
