Stan Lynde's Cowboy Lore & Legend ~ Feature posting Thursday 02-16-12: "By the 1880s cowboy boots had evolved to pretty much the same form as we know today, except they came up higher on the leg and the toes were more round than pointed. Nearly all cowboy boots of the 1880s were black in color, with a slanted heel about 2 inches high, although some heels went to 3 1/2 and even 4 inches! French calf was the usual leather (no ostrich, emu, or snake skin in those days!).

Stan Lynde's Cowboy Lore & Legend ~ During the 1860s, cowboys wore flat-heeled boots that were standard Civil War issue. These boots gave way to the cavalry boot, which boasted a higher heel and wood pegged soles. Around 1880. C.H. Hyer, of Olathe, Kansas offered custom-made boots to the cowboy trade. Hyer was the first boot maker to build on left and right lasts; earlier boots were made on straight lasts, with no difference between left and right. http://stanlynde.net

About Stan Lynde's channel
I became a storyteller in the usual way--by listening to and reading stories, in particular stories of the history, lore, and legend of the American West. Growing up on the big open ranges of the Crow Indian Reservation in southeastern Montana, my heroes were cowboys of the old school. I loved everything about them. As a kid, I followed my bow-legged role models around, got in their way, pestered them with questions, and disobeyed my mother's strict orders not to hang out at the bunkhouse.
