Believe me, I bow to no one in my love of St. Etienne. This tune is OK, but it's no match for "Slyvie" on "Good Humor." That CD did not have one weak track, and trio kept a lid on the disco excess.

Green Day ripped off the Buzzcocks more than anyone else, but these songs really don't sound alike. Hives would mop the floor with Green Day anyway.

@denparrish Rapid! Thanks for the info. I saw Johnny do Jumpin Jack Flash in 75 at a stadium concert in Pittsburgh. Derrigner not there, but he and second guitarist burned the place down with their double leads on the song. Great version of "Highway 61," too.

Steppenwolf is unfairly pigeonholed as a golden oldies band because "Born to Be Wild" and "Magic Carpet Ride" get played to death. They've never gotten credit for their depth, as exemplified by "Hey Lawdy Mama," "Screamin' Night Hog" and "Ride With Me."

There's an even more depressing song on this CD: "The Final Disappointment," about Harry's botched suicide.

Damn! It just hit me that Larry Graham did the low voice on the Sly and the Family Stone hits. I always assumed it was Sylvester Stewart singing "I'm gonna add some bottom...."

@Nomis2779 Yeah, love "Destiny" and "Morning Song." I'm on the fence about the latest stuff. Wish they could recapture that earlier magic with Sophie and Sia.

It's a lot harder than it looks soloing to this kind of blues shuffle beat. Your phrasing has to be dead on. It's not a like a slow blues, where you can just dance all over the guitar neck.

This version is far superior to the amputated single version.
