Dr Jacques Herzog and his colleagues at the Center for Hearing and Balance Disorders in St Louis, Missouri, are dedicated to helping individuals affected by hearing loss, dizziness, and other disorders of the ear and related structures. They strive to provide state of the art treatments for the deafened and hearing impaired.
Cochlear implants provide the unique ability to "turn on" hearing when no other options are available. The cochlear implant program at the Center for Hearing and Balance Disorders has successfully placed implants in recipients as young as nine months and as old as ninety years.
Dr Herzog was interviewed in January 2007 on a St Louis local news channel about cochlearimplants. Dr Herzog also talks in his video about implanting a congenitally deafened infant bilaterally with cochlear implants.
There are situations in which individuals may have hearing loss of a severity where conventional hearing aids provide little benefit, but not poor enough to require a cochlear implant.
The hybrid cochlear implant is an investigational device that blends a modified cochlear implant with a hearing aid.
Dr Herzog is interviewed about this device on a St Louis local news channel in June 2007. In this video, Dr Herzog explains how The Center for Hearing and Balance Disorders has been involved in a trial to determine the benefit of this type of device.
The results at this time show a substantial improvement for recipients with minimal risks.
In June 2007, Dr Herzog was interviewed about a trial device- a completely implantable hearing aid. The Center for Hearing and Balance Disorders is currently involved in a nationwide trial to study the effectiveness of a completely implantable hearing aid.
This device allows for complete implantation of a hearing aid including the microphone and
battery with no visible components. This in turn, allows individuals who are hard of
hearing to lead normal, active lifestyles with little or no impediment.
The Center for Hearing and Balance Disorders has two office locations in the St Louis area:
