Stratus, the best-selling ADS-B receiver in aviation, is a reliable way to get subscription-free weather, traffic, GPS and backup attitude information on your iPad. But the best keeps getting better. Three new features are now available as a free upgrade for Stratus Two, making your iPad an even more powerful in-flight tool.

All pilots want to maximize iPad battery life, and the new Stratus Replay feature does just that. By turning off the screen when your iPad is not in use, you can almost double the battery life during a flight. When you turn the screen on again, Stratus automatically sends ForeFlight all the ADS-B weather you missed, from radar to METARs to PIREPs. This is helpful on a long cross country and it also makes it possible to switch to another app without missing important weather data.

Best of all, there's nothing for the pilot to do - it's completely automatic.

NEXRAD radar is the most important weather product for pilots, and it's certainly one you'll watch in the summertime. But often the trend in the radar picture is every bit as important as the static image. That's why ForeFlight now offers animated radar when connected to Stratus. By tapping the play button, pilots can loop the previous 30 minutes of regional and national radar. Is that cell building or dissipating? Is it moving quickly or slowly? Now you know.

Stratus' built-in Attitude Heading Reference System creates a backup attitude indicator on your iPad, showing pitch, bank, groundspeed, track and altitude. Now this data can displayed right in ForeFlight, with a beautiful split screen view. The attitude indicator updates multiple times per second so it moves smoothly, and it can be used in either portrait or landscape mode. Now you can view A-D-S-B weather, traffic, moving map and attitude all on the same screen!

Stratus' automatic alignment process works in most cases, so there's nothing for the pilot to adjust. For tailwheel airplanes or precise changes, full calibration settings are available right in the app.

If you don't have a Stratus, you can still enjoy some of the benefits of the split screen attitude indicator when connected to a GPS. In this mode, you'll see tapes for groundspeed, altitude, vertical speed and track--but no pitch or bank information.

To access these new features, first download the latest version of ForeFlight in the App Store--version 6.0. Then connect your iPad to Stratus and go to the Status page. From there, you can update the Stratus firmware.
