Or does it seem more reasonable that oil exploration requires an understanding of stratigraphy - (The Geologic Column) - and index fossils that creationists deny the very existance of?

Here's where I note that evolution and atheism are two wholly separate subjects. One is a topic for which we can obtain much empirical knowledge; the other is... well, not.
There are many religious (yes, even Christian) scientists...
But there are NO "creation scientists". NOT ONE.
Creationist leaders are HUCKSTERS, not scientists.
You cannot compare the likes of John Polkinghorne (theoretical physicist and Anglican priest) with Kent Hovind (professional idiot and liar).
Polkinghorne studied particle physics and tries to understand his God in light of observable reality.
Hovind will borrow money from you and then look you in the eye and tell you he does not owe you any money. In fact, he's in prison for exactly that.
