Applewood is a converted church situated on 10 acres of Australian bushland 45 minutes west of Brisbane Australia. It is the home of music producer/sound engineer Magoo and wife, singer/songwriter, Tylea. Previously a Catholic church in a neighbouring town, Applewood was relocated by the Jumelet family to it's present site in 1981. It was their family home for 25 years.
The main church area is built from vintage raked pine (from 1911) and spans 16m in length x 8 m wide x8 m high. Restored lovingly by Ron Jumelet, the room allows for a spacious and resonate eloquence.
On occasion, Magoo works here using Black Box Studio B rig (a rig he co-owns with Jeff Lovejoy). The evolving studio set up is uncomplicated and is geared towards overdubbing and simple instrumental tracking.
Artists' accommodation is available complete with a separate kitchenette and bathroom. The apartment overlooks a 13 m saltwater tiled pool and is surrounded by towering eucalypts.
Since moving to Applewood in 2007 Magoo has recorded/overdubbed releases for: Flamingo Crash - Triangle Island Chris Pickering- Excuses, Excuses Iron On - the Verse the Gin Club's - Junk (double album) Roz Papalardo Wind and Brackets An Horse Tylea and the Imaginary Music Score.
In September 2007, Tylea, Magoo and Jeff Lovejoy (Black Box Recordings) hosted the Songs of Applewood -- songwriting project. Sponsored by Black Box Recordings, Tylea, Magoo, Jeff, and APRA, the project featured 21 or so invited Brisbane artists over a three day period. Each day the writer was paired with a new songwriting partner and created a new work in one day. The song was demoed by Magoo or Jeff Lovejoy and resulted in 15 new works made and recorded on the 'Songs of Applewood cd'. The cd was distributed at QMusic's Big sound in Oct 2007 to an overwhelming response. It is hoped the project will become an annual event and help profile and pool the talents of songwriters locally and nationally.
