Deciding that I wanted out of Jehovah's Witnesses was easy. From the age of six I knew that I didn't believe any of it, and I was intelligent enough to know that if I admited that, it would destroy my family. Period.
I was twelve years old when I made the leap. My espcape wasn't planned and I honestly never thought I had the cahones to go through with it anyway. On a Sunday afternoon, my "mom" was driving my sister and I home from their "church" service at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses. I'd just sat through another two hour hour Sunday morning service, in a clip-on tie and patten leather shoes that were too small for me.
I was in the backseat on the driver's side, and my sister was in the front seat of the brand new Plymouth, strapped in a seat belt listening to mom and I arguing. I'd made a smart ass comment to her and that was very out of character for me. She'd never tolerated back-talk and that day wouldn't be any different. She slammed on the brakes and the car came to a dead stop on the county road.
We were a few miles from home, and trees lined both sides of the isolated road. My mother opened her door and got out of the car; declaring that she was about to get a switch from one of those trees and give me the spanking I'd been deserving all week. My sister who was five, looked at me over the seat. Our eyes locked as my left hand slid into the door handle. It happened as calmly and automatically as you brush your teeth in the morning. In a single instant two things happened. I popped the door handle open and my little sitster who we called Mrs. Kitty, inhaled and screamed at the top of her lungs without moving any other part of her body. Our eyes still locked, "MOM... He's gettin' awaaaay!" Mrs. Kitty screamed, as I slid out of the car in a single elegant motion. My mom had walked around the car to the passenger's side to find a suitable tree limb to beat me with and that had given me the distance I needed. In my slick bottomed Sunday's best shoes, I sprung into the high grass and across a deep ditch. I dove into the tree line.
I ran until my heart pounded in the back of my skull, and now I was far enough into the woods that I could no longer hear the Plymouth idling on the country road, or Mrs. Kitty's screams of terror. Feeling that I'd put some distance between myself and the car; I dared to stop and turn around.
In the distance I could see my mom in her knee high boots and Plaid skirt, tangled in the bushes. She was still on the edge of the tree-line faced with a decision. Does she leave her five year old daughter strapped into an idling car on a deserted county road with both the front and back seat driver's side doors open? Or does she allow her twelve year old son to dissappear into the woods, miles from anywhere? From a distance of about a hundred yards, my mom and I made brief eye contact but I wasn't sure if she even knew that. She paused, and then she made her decision and returned to her daughter. I wasn't surprised, since only two months before that I'd just found out that she wasn't even my mother. That I had a real mother, who gave birth to me, and she was looking for me!
The car sped off toward home. Toward a phone that she would rush to call my father on who left the kingdom Hall at the same time we did to check on his job. I supposed he would be getting the call in about twenty minutes.
The decision had been made. I ran.
