Johannes Brahms' amazing Variations on a Theme by Paganini, Op. 35, Book 1, performed by 20-yr-old (at the time this recording was made) American pianist and cellist, Chris Rice.
Chris made this recording shortly before he was selected as one of the 215 competitors admitted to the 2010 Chopin International Piano Competition (held in Warsaw, Poland). His selection followed the Chopin competition's initial world-wide preliminary round. Three days after the competition began in Warsaw, and three days before Chris' family was scheduled to leave for the competition, the Icelandic volcano erupted, and the family's flight was one of over 100,000 flights which had to be canceled! This meant that Chris, along with many other competitors, was not able to participate in the 2010 competition! While this was of course sad news, from Chris' point of view, he is *very* much looking forward to the *next* Chopin competition, which will be held in Warsaw in 2015!
This year (2011), Chris and his brother Johnny are both going to be traveling to Pörtschach, Austria, where they will be participating in the Brahms International Music Competition. Each of them will be competing in the piano division, and also the cello division. The piece Chris is playing in this video, Brahms' Variations on a Theme by Paganini, is one of Chris' competition pieces. He will also be playing Book 2 of these variations ... this means that Chris will be playing a theme, followed by 28 variations, which take more than 20 minutes to play!

Ruth Knutson, piano; Melanie Ellison, cello (recorded 8/2010). To order full CD, go to: http://www.homeschoolhowtos.com/store... Here are the meaningful lyrics to both songs: THE LOVE OF GOD is greater far
Than tongue or pen can ever tell;
It goes beyond the highest star,
And reaches to the lowest hell;
The guilty pair, bowed down with care,
God gave His Son to win;
His erring child He reconciled,
And pardoned from his sin.
Refrain:
Oh, love of God, how rich and pure!
How measureless and strong!
It shall forevermore endure—
The saints' and angels' song.
HOW DEEP THE FATHER'S LOVE FOR US: Could we with ink the ocean fill,
And were the skies of parchment made,
Were every stalk on earth a quill,
And every man a scribe by trade;
To write the love of God above
Would drain the ocean dry;
Nor could the scroll contain the whole,
Though stretched from sky to sky.
Refrain: How deep the Father's love for us, How vast beyond all measure That He should give His only Son To make a wretch His treasure
How great the pain of searing loss, The Father turns His face away As wounds which mar the chosen One, Bring many sons to glory
Behold the Man upon a cross, My sin upon His shoulders Ashamed I hear my mocking voice, Call out among the scoffers
It was my sin that left Him there Until it was accomplished His dying breath has brought me life I know that it is finished
I will not boast in anything No gifts, no power, no wisdom But I will boast in Jesus Christ His death and resurrection
Why should I gain from His reward? I cannot give an answer But this I know with all my heart His wounds have paid my ransom
Medley arranged by Ruth Knutson and Melanie Ellison. (How Deep the Father's Love for Us words and music by Stuart Townend, adapted here from an arrangement by Tom Fettke.)
