Gastric bypass patient 13.5 months out.
Still losing weight. Even though my family says I 'm skinny enough and my GYN say not to lose any more, I am actually 1 pound away from my nutritionists goal ,and currently weigh what I did in high school and I am not starving myself this time around!
Currently having metabolic blood sugar issues that cause my blood sugar to drop that prevents me from exercising at this time.( Not diabetes) Metabolic issue, related to a large 45 pound tumor discovered in my belly and an adrenal tumor. (Thank God the tumor was benign, but unfortunately, was producing hormones on its own. So much so that I gained over 100+ pounds of fluid). It got so bad back in June it landed me in the hospital with uncontrollable seizures etc.. kidney failure, liver problems and crushed intestines,and heart problems. I was so close to dying, that my weight plummeted below 100 pounds. I weighed 152 lbs on the day of admission to the ER to less than 100 pounds after surgery. To give you an idea of how bad I looked I looked like a concentration victim. ( I am 5'7").
For those of you that are wondering why my tumor was not addressed or discovered earlier, 1. I had no insurance, and when I did have insurance, my so called doctors were to busy running unnecessary expensive tests and too prejudiced against fat people. I gained weight in my belly. All they would tell me is to use the rest room that I was constipated! Believe me I know when I am constipated.!

As for my WLS surgeron, he was just too money hungry and unethical to say the least to to the right thing He discovered the tumor during my RNY procedure and instead of stopping and addressing the tumor and my damaged intestines etc.. he continued with the RNY. . As a result he not only put my life at stake, he put the hospital, himself and and those who assisted him during surgery liable for malpractice. Legally, I still have options.

Maybe sometime soon when I get a webcam I post more on the subject,

I just want everyone considering WLS surgery to do your homework, not only on the procedure and the complications but also do a through back round check on your doctor. I did and it still nearly killed me. It doesn't matter if you are insured or not. Although self paying individuals are even more at risk from predatory, money grubbing surgeons like the one I had.

WLS is not the easy way out. In fact, everyday is a constant reminder how much more difficult it is that doing it the old fashion way of counting calories and carbs. Be proactive!
Make your doctor listen to you, make them accountable, before, during and afterwards. It is the only way to change the current wrongs being done to all unsuspecting patients out there. Even after surgery, demand for all your post op visits to be with your surgeon and not the Nurse practitioner. The nurse didn't operate on you. Your surgeon did. Remember regardless of how your procedure was paid for, your surgeon works for you! Only you know what you are going through and only you have 100% interest in yourself and he or she has to stay accountable. We are not a car on an assembly line.

I am not against WLS surgery. Had I known what was going on in my body before and had the right medical assistance that I needed, I in all likelihood would not do it over again. I have no regrets, so things are supposed to happen the way they happen and are beyond our control. Either way it is not any easy journey. I am grateful that my condition was finally addressed even if it meant having RNY and a second surgery 10 months later. We make the best decisions when can with what we know at that time. For me the best decision was to have RNY.
It is not an easy choice. I like most WLS patients, and pre ops are usually so sick and feeling like they are are knocking on deaths door that this is their last hope that we feel we have run out of options. In many cases we have. But unless we throughly educate ourselves, make the necessary lifestyle changes and make them for the rest of our lives the surgery will all in vain. Food is only part of the equation or better yet a symptom of some underlying issue we have been too afraid for whatever reason to address, but acknowledging that there is a problem is the first step to any recovery.
WLS is a personal decision, only you can decide for your self if it is the right thing to. I wish everyone health, wellbeing both in mind, body and spirit and all that God intends for you. GOD BLESS!

AUG 17 2011 UPDATE 3 years 12 days post RNY. Had been maintaining my surpassed goal weight up until this last month broke down and got on the scales and found out that I am up 15lbs!. I Suspect my metabolic/ hormonal issues is no longer in remission and am retaining fluid while my body is catabolizing my muscles for the protein I can not digest. I am scare to of regaining because of the symptoms it brought organ failure and drowning in my own fluids than dying. Keep me in you prayers. God B
