About this user

I beleive a happy, honest, moral, and effective life must be based on scientific principles. Everything in life flows from this: morality, ethics, emotional coping, problem solving, public policy, politics, etc. Beliefs and practices concerning all these aspects of existence must be based on a foundation of scientific knowledge to have any relevance or usefulness. I believe that I need sufficient visual evidence of all that exists either directly or indirectly. This personal philosophy could be called scientific Skepticism, which differs from other types of Skepticism. The heart of this philosophy is the contention that it is best to assume something is false until there is sufficient evidence to suggest it is likely true. Faith and intuition are unreliable as ways to determine truth. Both can be used to come up with ideas worth testing, but the testing itself can never be based on either. Experimentation must follow to determine the value of any hypothesis. In the same way, thinking in the absence of experimentation, is also unreliable. Again, thinking on its own can lead us to certain basic truths, but without experimental confirmation, thinking rarely will lead us to definitive complex understandings of how our world works. As I like to say, "thoughts are not facts." Something can "make sense" to you and still be false. Also, many things that science proves to be true are counter intuitive and seem not to "make sense." Most people cannot tell when they are engaging in intuition, speculative thinking, or thinking anchored in observable facts. These three mental modes of processing experience are significantly different and only the later leads to verifiable truth. People frequently state they are arguing logically (usually without any reference to scientific theory and fact) when in fact they are only engaging in an exploration of feelings, thoughts, and wishes- all of them internal states which tell us nothing about the world save what we think, feel, and often wish were true about it. I believe that the stance I am describing is noble and leads to moral behavior, since one has to know the truth to be moral. This stance leads to the solving of human problems. I notice that faith has a tendency to lead to violence and the incapacity to solve problems. I have much in common with secular humanists, atheists, skeptics, and freethinkers. I would like to hear from anyone interested in what I have written here. I am intrigued by the thoughts of others and will respond to all.
