Calls for RBS boss to lose knighthood

Gordon Brown's closeness to former Royal Bank of Scotland chief Sir Fred Goodwin came under fire today amid calls for him to be stripped of his knighthood.
The ex-chief executive, nicknamed 'Fred the Shred', instigated the disastrous acquisition of Dutch bank ABN Amro that placed a toxic loan timebomb at the heart of one of Scotland's oldest financial institutions.
About Me:

Sir Fred Goodwin, the former chief executive of Royal Bank of Scotland, has been threatened with legal action unless he forfeits a pension worth almost £700,000 a year even more than previously thought.

A furious row blew up today after it emerged that Goodwin's pension pot had been doubled to £16m before he quit the bank in disgrace last autumn.

Alistair Darling, the chancellor, has ordered lawyers to explore every avenue to see if there are legal grounds to claw back Goodwin's massive pension pot. He revealed this morning that City minister Lord Myners has already asked Goodwin to waive his rights to it before the issue ends up in the courts.

Details of Goodwin's pension emerged last night, hours before the bank he used to run announced the biggest loss in corporate history. It was originally thought that the 50-year-old was receiving £650,000 a year, but the current RBS chairman Sir Philip Hampton admitted this lunchtime that the pension is actually worth £693,000 per annum.

Darling made it clear that he was determined to claw back the money, adding that Goodwin had not yet replied to the request from Myners.

"I'm very clear that we will do whatever we can. We have got the lawyers looking at this. But on a voluntary basis Sir Fred could resolve this, and resolve it quickly, himself," Darling told the BBC's Today programme.
