The group is founded in Glasgow in 1977, on the initiative of vocalist Jim Kerr and Charlie Burchill guitarist. The two previously had briefly formed a post-punk group called "Johnhy and the Self Abusers", which in 1977 released their 7 single, "Saints & Sinners.
They join Derek Forbes on bass, Mick MacNeil on keyboards and Brian McGee on drums. The choice of name was intended as an homage to "The Jean Genie of David Bowie (" He's so simple-minded, he can't drive his module ").
