THIS SHOULDN'T EVEN BE A STORY. Jeremy Lin even said himself "I dont even think it was intentional. He went to Harvard so I'm going to listen to the smart guy. People are being WAY too sensitive about this. I think we need to "educate our instincts" as I like to say, and evolve past getting offended at dumb shit. ESPN wasn't calling Jeremy Lin a chink (that obviously would be racist), they were using a very common expression to describe the turnovers in his game. "Chink in the armor" (yes chink, not kink as some of you may think) has been used many times in sports and in other things to describe a weakness or weak point, much like saying "achilles heel." People are connecting two unrelated things because they are hyper sensitive about race/racism. That headline is not causing harmful action against Asian people or spawning more racists, therefore there is no need to be that upset about it.
If they were calling him a chink, then who is the armor??? The Knicks? That makes no sense! Its not like the Knicks were some unbeatable team and Lin was the one that made them lose. He was tied for a game high 26 points! They were saying the turnovers were the chink in HIS armor.
For those of you that think they would not have used "chink in the armor" if it was a non asian player, you are wrong. They have done it many times because its a very common phrase. Just google chink in the armor and then any other popular basketball player like Kobe, LeBron, Blake Griffin etc. You will find the phrase used in regards to them too.
Yes, ESPN should have figured people would be upset at this and not done it in the first place but what Im saying is we need to move on from getting so offended at name calling. Even if someone at ESPN did it on purpose, what ever happened to "sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me"? It's seriously time to be the bigger person and not even play into the hands of whoever wrote that headline.
Some people say "that's the phrase racist people use to slip it in! He was trying to slip it in!" Thats just ridiculous. If so many people were hurt by the phrase "chink in the armor" because that's how kids on the playground "slip it in" to make fun of asians, then how come a LARGE, almost majority of people didn't even know the phrase! People who watch sports know the phrase because its used quite commonly.
But, a large amount of people who dont regularly watch sports are now watching because of Jeremy Lin, and those people of course get offended simply because they are ignorant to the phrase. The word "chink" as a derogatory term is from about the late 1800s or so and the phrase "chink in the armor" dates back to mediveal times!
Some people think Im not sticking up for Asians but really, I am. I am saying to Asians that this is not the most important thing to get offended at. Its the same reason why I made the Asians In The Library music video. I was laughing at the stupidity of the situation instead of being offended at it. For those of you who think because Im half white or that Im part Japanese and not Chinese and therefore wouldnt fully understand are just flat out wrong. My dad is full Japanese and agrees that we should just laugh at stupid things like this and not being Chinese doesnt mean I havent been called chink or jap or something derogatory.
Talk to anyone from another country, they will tell you that the US is VERY overly aware of race and makes things a much bigger deal when they shouldn't be. I think a large portion of people are getting unnecessarily offended at this and/or thinking it's racist simply because they're ignorant and did not know what the phrase meant.
Anyway, why is this a story? ESPN posted something, people complained, they took it down. The end. It's not like they kept it up there after being asked. I just dont think people being offended at something should be blown up into a story. If someone gets injured or property gets damaged, ok. Feelings hurt? Who gives a fuck?!
Comments are disabled because people were getting way more racist than this story.
