    Scoped Mosin-Nagant 91/30

A quick look at my new 1932 M91/30 with a 4X NcStar Pistolero scout scope.

    SilntObsvr SilntObsvr commented:

@FoodFolksandGuns I have a simple policy: I won't buy from an e-tailer who won't give me the shipping amount before I confirm the purchase. You can *always* find one who will tell you, and it'll almost always be less.

    Mosin Nagant Pt. 2

Sorry about the part two, but my camera battery died and I had to get more batteries.

    SilntObsvr SilntObsvr commented:

It's actually very easy to find ammunition -- most of the local gun shops carry at least one type. The one where I bought my Mosin has only Silver Bear in 174 gr FMJ boat tail, but there's another nearby that has Silver Bear, Brown Bear, and PPU/Prvi Partizan (the latter is brass case reloadable...

    SilntObsvr SilntObsvr commented:

@waterboyark Interesting -- I've seen a number of attempts at using bottleneck cases in revolvers over the last 40+ years, and they've all suffered from cylinder lockup due to cases setting back as the shoulder expands. Does this .300 GNR have some special feature to prevent that?

@ZombieMasterEd25 Then you'd better get on the phone to your gunsmith and get him to turn off the welder and step away from the Mosin. Once he welds on that rail (I looked at your video), there's no going back, and if he warps the barrel (highly likely) your rifle will never, ever shoot straight.

    Mosin Rimlock Attempt

Pretty much saying that Mosin rifles are designed to prevent rimlock as much as possible.

    SilntObsvr SilntObsvr commented:

You wouldn't believe the crap I got from another poster when I told him rim lock in his Mosin indicated his interrupter wasn't working right -- he then proceeded to tell me the interrupter and ejector are one piece (and call me names). When I called him on *that*, he deleted the whole comment st...

Long eye relief (scout scope) for Mosin Nagant 91/30 part 2 - questions answered

Scout scope setup for MN 91/30 or 91/59 , continuation to first video. Viewers questions answered

    SilntObsvr SilntObsvr commented:

I like the use of pins to hold the rings in place on the dovetail. As for the scope -- the long eye relief scopes used for this type of mount are originally designed for handguns, and can typically handle more recoil than even the lightest military trim Mosin Nagant will generate (they can handl...

    SilntObsvr SilntObsvr commented:

One should note that data for a 150 gr JSP flat base is *NOT* interchangeable with 150 gr FMJ boat tail -- the bullets will protrude a different distance into the case, and have different bearing lengths in the bore; worse, some loading manuals give data for .308 bullets (in a .308 groove barrel)...

    SilntObsvr SilntObsvr commented:

@Arwrologist Much of the European ammunition for the Mosin has a "bimetal" jacket -- copper over steel -- to protect the bore from the excessive wear found in original steel jackets prior to WWI. Still not acceptable for a range with very high fire danger, most likely (the steel can still spark ...

Thoughts on "Steel Core Ammo" and how uninformed people are

So went shooting at an indoor range in the DFW metroplex and the told me my ammo was steel core..... No it aint!

    SilntObsvr SilntObsvr commented:

@SpencerAK74M Oh, to answer your question -- I don't own a 7.62x39, but the Silver Bear 7.62x54r (174 gr FMJ, zinc plated steel case w/ Berdan) that I bought with my Mosin certainly appears to be steel core. I'm not going to pull and section a bullet to check...

    SilntObsvr SilntObsvr commented:

If you're getting rim-over-rim jams (caused by upper round rim behind that of next lower round) you need to adjust the interrupter in the magazine -- it should keep the second round down far enough for the top rim to clear. You can adjust the interrupter by taking out the screw that holds it at ...

@dudeman123890 The bullet or pellet begins to slow immediately after leaving the muzzle -- with a precise enough chronograph, you could measure the speed to be slower ten meters down range as opposed to directly at the muzzle. Did I just see you chamber a new round after the shot, then sling the rifle and walk away with a live round in the chamber and safety off? For heaven's sake, take the bolt out before you remove the action from the stock. It'll simplify access to that rear screw, and remove any doubt (at a glance) whether the weapon is in a safe condition. There's no reason to have the bolt in for this operation.

    SilntObsvr SilntObsvr commented:

Hollow points might not be the right choice for this task; I'd guess that lack of penetration was more of a problem than lack of power (or even shot placement). Soft points (without the hollow) will expand almost as much, if the velocity is sufficient, but won't fragment on the hog's "armor" -- ...

Sixteen inches at 400 meters is 4 moa -- that's still not bad for a 70 year old rifle, the more so if you're using surplus ammunition.
