more
Chandi Di Vaar is composition of Guru Gobind Singh Ji. This is known as Durga Path in Hinduism. Bibi Gurdev Kaur OBE recites Var Sri Bhagauti JI Ki, mostly known by Sikhs as Chandi Di Var in Raag Maarva. Bhagauti stands for God and sometimes for sword which is identified with God. Written in fifty-five stanzas. The first stanza of Chandi di Var forms the introductory part of the ardaas, the Sikh prayer; "Pritham bhagauti simar kai Guru Nanak layeen dhiaaye". Following the invocation, this composition is a description of war betwwen Chandi (Durga) and demons as mentioned in the ancient writings. It is written in a clear style and deals with matters related to war so it appeals strongly to soldiers and warriors. In the ancient times literature of this kind was read during the wars to enthuse the warriors to heights of glory and heroism and even today the same tradition prevails. The ballads are extremely metaphorical and deeply narrative in nature, and describe the battles of Durga (also known as Chandi, Bhawani, Kalika) against many demon warlords (such as Mehkhaasur, Chandh, Mundh, Sronat Bej, Sumbh, Nisumbh and Domar Lochan). Based on the tales of Durga in Markanday Puraan, these ballads also weave in the intricacies of the higher power God (Akaal) that controls creation, yet is also within it. The main reason for writing about war and Chandi so many times was that Guru Gobind Singh Ji wanted to affect a sea change in the mental make up of the society, to enthuse and encourage them for the war of Righteousness that he planned to undertake. The aim of this ballad (55 verses) is to inspire warriors to stand up for truth and righteousness in the face of tyranny and oppression. On a deeper level they deal with the internal struggle to control basic animal instincts. Thus Chandi became the embodiment of strength and might in female form and was described in all her majesty and glory. Guru Gobind Singh taught that Chandi is none other than the primordial power of the Almighty which fights evil, and, as such, Chandi is actually not to be worshipped as an idol but instead revered by using the 'Tegh' (sword). Hence he taught all that the true worship of Chandi was actually knowing how to wield the sword in battle to destroy evil. Dharam Pal Ashta considers Chandi di Var as one of the finest Punjabi poetry written. It abounds in imagery: arrows fall like a heavy showers, lightning comes down hissing like snakes, soldiers are locked in mortal combat like wild beasts. This song was popularly sung by the Sikh soldiers on their way to battlefield.

In 1992 Bibi Gurdev Kaur OBE was requested by the Council of Sikh Gurdwaras in Birmingham to help them to celebrate Guru Nanak Dev Ji's Gurpurb in the Council House. She was asked to prepare a group of children for Kirtan performance. She trained these children along with their families, who had never sung a note before and could not read Punjabi or speak it fluently. The Family Choir worked hard and performed for Gurpurb Celebrations at their local Gurdwara. They sing "Ooch Appar beyant Suaamee", "Haazra Hazoor Siree Guru Granth Sahib JI", "Dhann Guru Nanak Dev", "Raaj Karayga Khalsa", "Names of Ten Gurus" and "Naam Simran".
