I studied psych and philosophy in university and hope to return to that in the future. I recently spent a few years in Japan trying to pay back loans and get a different perspective on things. Now I'm back in Canada. Most of my YouTube activity revolves arround throwing my 20円 in on threads and videos about (as I see it) topics in philosophy and science.
I enjoy reading Douglas Hofstadter, Daniel Dennett, Steven Pinker, Richard Dawkins, VS Ramachandran, Jonah Lehrer, and other popular science writers, especially in the areas of cognitive science, neuroscience, or evolutionary psychology.
I consider it possible to be a "spiritual" atheist, as long as the word "spirit" isn't confused with a supernatural notion. I like what Hofstadter and Dennett have to say about the "soul" as something meaningful to talk about, just not in the traditionally supernatural sense.
Philosophically I'm influenced by Sartre and other existentialists, but I don't really have a "favourite" that stands out clearly. I'm not a pure existentialist myself, as I believe too much in a biologically based human nature.
I'm also a latent martial artist of sorts, having begun karate at the age of 30 but moved on to aikido due to moving near an aikido-jo in Japan. Now I'm back in Canada, practicing some classical Japanese martial arts (Ono-ha Itto-ryu kenjutsu, aikijujutsu, and Kashima Shinto-ryu). I remain very much a humble beginner, but I do love it.
I'm not into "flame wars" or calling people names. I'm into good, reflective, respectful discussion.
Unfortunately, I rarely post a comment without some typo or spelling error. I survived university because of word processing!
I also like to laugh. The only TV show I watch is the Daily Show via web streaming. Otherwise I mostly just read books/articles or watch videos on YouTube!
I don't think this debate will change many minds.Craig is talking the language of academic philosophy. Harris is avoiding it.
People sympathetic to Craig will simply see Harris as avoiding the "knockdown" critcisms and failing to justify "objectively" any moral statement without apealing to su...
