About Me:
Growing up French-Canadian in Brampton, I played the organ and sang in the church choir. By the age of eight, I was entering singing competitions and winning them all. I joined a rock and roll band, Reflections, at the age of 12 and traveled the province of Ontario winning 1st place in several competitions. My mother often took me to the studio, encouraging me to do what I love most - singing. A big lover of classic country music, my mother taught me hundreds of songs, which I often performed for big family celebrations.
Joining a reggae band at the age of 16 rounded out my musical background. One of my most memorable performances was in Sept. 1988 at Moss Park, Toronto, a relief fund concert for the victims of Hurricane Gilbert in Jamaica. That same year, I shared the stage at a sold-out Christmas show at Soul City in Hamilton, ON singing a duet with Winston 'Boyo' Hammond, brother of Beres Hammond.
My first demo CD was engineered by Micheal Jack of Lenz Entertainment. He has since engineered sessions for Bono, Nelly Furtado, Hilary Duff, Rush, "Song For Africa", Big Sugar, Kardinal Offishal, Ludacris, Jann Arden, Sass Jordan, Anne Murray, Jesse Cook, Olivia Newton John and many more.
My second CD, engineered by Dan Kennedy (at Amariah studio), consisted of original songs which debuted on The New Rock Hour with Andre Shikalenko (currently with Y108 FM) of ROCK 95 FM, a local Barrie, ON radio station, Dec. 13, 1998. Later that year on New Years Eve, I opened up for Melanie Doane and the Skydiggers at a downtown open concert for 5000 people, which was broadcast live to CKVR and CITY-TV. In 1999, I won an audition to play on Canada Day at Chinguacousy Park in Brampton, ON, a venue of over 70,000 people.
I've taught many people how to play the piano, including my daughter, using a method I call "The Gates Method" using SEVEN specific lessons which make playing songs on the piano attainable in a short amount of time. I developed this method after hearing hundreds of people tell me that they took 'a few lessons and dropped out'. They were discouraged after not being able to play their favorite songs within, what they felt was, a reasonable amount of time. My method teaches children and adults alike, to play without reading music from a staff. Essentially, it is a guide to playing music by ear.
Since 1999 I have played various venues throughout Ontario, mostly private functions. As a soloist, I've enjoyed singing jazz, blues and swing, with the inspiration of a great legend and dear friend, Curley Bridges. Now based in Toronto, I will be playing live in the summer of 2011 and will list my shows on here soon.
