This game tops my "favourite games of all time" list for a number of very good reasons and I hope to demonstrate these reasons for you all during this play through.
Honestly I cannot speak highly enough of how brilliant this game is. I consider this game "the best game ever made by human hands". If I ever happen to play a game that I consider better than this then I will call that game "the best game ever made by non-human hands".
Sadly not a lot of people have even heard of this game due to the fact that it was never released in USA for various religious and/or translation issues, plus the fact that this game came out towards the end of the SNES's life. The game was developed by a company called Quintet who hadn't done much before this game and didn't do much after this game. The company seems dead now with the members moving on to work at other companies.
So where to begin? Firstly, this game show cases some of the greatest looking cutscenes ever to grace the SNES platform. What they managed to do with the limited graphics of the SNES is mind blowing and honestly this recording does not do the cinematics justice. Play this game for yourself to see them in their full glory. Other than the cinematics, the rest of the game's visuals are also incredibly pleasing and beautiful, with many different environments.
Of course, visuals themselves aren't enough to make a great game. Let's talk about the soundtrack next. This soundtrack is quite possibly one of the greatest soundtracks ever created for the game, period. Of the 30+ soundtracks in this game, there are only around 2 soundtracks which are bad. Around 23 of them are all complete masterpieces. The remaining soundtracks are so good that you could listen to them for a week straight and still be completely in love with them. You'll hear for yourself the amazing musical scores that this game has in this LP.
But it doesn't stop there. The combat system in this game is absolutely amazing, the second best combat system I've ever played in an RPG for the SNES. The first best combat system belongs to Secret of Mana due to its co-operative play, ability to charge attacks and better magic system. Terranigma's combat system is similar to Secret of Mana in that the enemies appear in different rooms and you can just walk up to them and attack them as you like. So rather than random battles, the monsters are part of the dungeon exploration (much like Zelda). There are multiple basic ways to attack that you will grow accustom to throughout the game and slowly master, which I will showcase for you during the LP and you will never experience another combat system like this one ever.
Even ignoring all of the aspects I've previously talked about though, hands down, the very best part of this game is the incredible storyline. I don't want to give too much away about Terranigma's plot because a lot of you will be seeing this game for the first time during this LP, but I consider this one of gaming's greatest stories of all time. It has somewhat of a personally involving feel to it once you realise the impact of what you are doing within this game. Interestingly, the game actually takes place in real world locations which you will come to see through the LP. What I've most pleased about is the fact that the story integrates so well into the gameplay. Generally speaking for many games these days they're either too story-focused or too gameplay-focused. Terranigma is an example of a game that can do both at an exceptional level.
So, now you know why I love this game so much and why you should experience it for yourselves. The gameplay and story still holds up even to this day in age, a sign of a truly incredible title. I hope you all enjoy my LP of Terranigma!
Let's Play: Hamtaro Rainbow Rescue
The final of my Hamtaro LPs - and the longest!
This game is somewhat of a jack-of-all-trades. It has mini game aspects from Ham Ham Games and RPG aspects from Ham Ham Heartbreak.
