About Me:
I have a passion for telling things the way the are, blunt and to the point - so please don't be expecting sugar coated lyrics because sometimes things just need to be told as they are !
I have been the same since school when it comes to my ambitions - always wanted to have a voice in one way or another, and especially with my so called 'behaviour issues' i made sure i was always heard.
I think i was misunderstood and branded as one of the kids that would never be anything but trouble - until i channelled all my excess energy and torment from a turbulant childhood into music.
Ask most 11 year old girls who they had in there cassette player and that time and it was britney or christina. But i grew up relating to the likes of eminems 'puke' fused with a love for power vocals such as 'blackbox ride on time' - an unlikely combination i know. But something hit me strong about a women with such power in her voice, and a man venting every last ounce of anger from the core of his body to the tip of his tongue.
So this inspired me to write... when i reached 12, i was told by a school shrink to create a diary log of my emotions. At first i laughed it off, but soon warmed to it when my pen hit the paper. I won't ever forget ready back my first entry, and thinking to myself who that crazy girl was feeling that way. It was like an escape - okay to say whatever i wanted on paper. Like that girl wasn't me. Soon i started to merge my entries into rhymes and with that formed raps, hooks and songs.
I kept them to myself until Secondary School (i went to 3 primary schools and 4 secondary schools) when i overheard one particular group of girls talking s**t about me (they wouldn't dare have said it to my face) ... and i was thinking that they'd never understand life in my shoes, so a couple of days later when they were smiley smiley with me, i ceased the moment and sang something raw, true and hard - hitting that i had written, portraying my early years living with my birth mum up until 7, and there faces soon changed as did there understanding of me.
What shocked me most was not there quick change of heart, but the compliments that followed about my voice. I brushed it off - but was never shy of confidence to sing on the street to anybody from then on.
I kept writing more and more, as things from home to home never got better really until i reached 17. In and out of foster care, always in a scuff, and making a general mess of things - but as my list of experiences, life lessons and general cock ups grew, so did the big black folder of songs.
Soon before i knew it i had files and files of songs i had written each personal or about my observations from people watching (i still love to that now) - i only wrote them down out of fear i would forget them but its funny how now those folders lie somewhwere dusty in a attic, i still remember each and everyone. Hundreds. I guess you just cant shake a memory.
The turning point for me was my two years spent at Totton College in Southampton, a new mix of people, a new set of teachers, a new start and most importantly focus on one thing - MUSIC. By this point i knew without doubt, it was the only thing keeping me sane.
After 2 years on a Btec Music Course , I came away with a triple distinction and a conditional offer to study Popular Music at Goldsmiths University, London. Long story cut shot, i tried it, it wasn't for me and i dropped out.
I knew i had no time to waste. Just wanted to make music and not sit around and talk about it. So I used my strongest assett once again - my gobb ! Started talking, networking and worked my way up working as session vocalists for singers, bands and rappers all across london.
I soon got tired of this, and paid my friend to leave her room for a week, so i could record in her little home set - up. From there i vented 19 years worth of emotions and hit the record button....
And that takes us to now, i'm under new management and have big things planned for you all in 2012. I can't promise my music is a one way ticket to Soya's world but i hope it helps u escape yours even for a brief moment x
