Senator Rodger M. Smitherman represents the interests of District 18 in the Alabama Senate. This district encompasses Jefferson County, which includes the City of Birmingham, the largest municipality in the State of Alabama and also portions of Mountain Brook, Homewood and Hoover. First elected to public office in 1994, voters have consistently returned him to the state capitol in Montgomery. Not only has he earned voter confidence, he also has earned the respect of his legislative peers. In 2009, his colleagues chose him to serve as Senate President Pro Tempore.

Leadership and service come natural to Senator Smitherman. His mother was the first African-American principal in the Shelby County public school system. His father was an entrepreneur. However, fate forced a young Rodger Smitherman to grow up fast. At age 12, his parents became disabled and he became the family caregiver. After his parents died, he became the court-appointed guardian of a younger sibling. Juggling multiple responsibilities, he attended the University of Montevallo, graduating with a Bachelors degree in Business Administration and later earned a law degree from Miles Law School, finishing with honors.

He has steadily moved forward throughout his professional life, rising from his first job working on a grass farm to his current position as the third most powerful official in state government. But senator is just one of his many titles.

He is also an attorney in private practice with his wife, Carole Smitherman, a dynamic leader in her own right. She is a Birmingham City Councilor, chosen by her colleagues to serve as President of the Council. In 2009, circumstances forced her to become interim Mayor of Birmingham, making her the first woman to occupy this office. She is also a former prosecuting attorney and the first African-American woman to serve as a circuit court judge in Alabama.

The Smithermans have four children and an extended family that includes hundreds of children whom they have nurtured. Senator Smitherman is the Ramsay High School head coach for the junior varsity girls' basketball team and assistant coach for the girls varsity basketball team, which has won four state championship titles. At W. J. Christian School, he was assistant coach for soccer, softball and girls basketball. A consummate multi-tasker, Senator Smitherman is also a college professor, semi-pro golfer and church elder.
