About this user
Secret Rivals are an Oxford based 4 piece, formed in late 2008 through a shared obsession of records such as Idlewild's 'Captain' and bands such as You Say Party We Say Die and The Cribs. Secret Rivals self released their early recordings on 'What Fists Are For' in late 2009, catching the attention of BBC radio and XFM. Although unasahmedly low-fi, the record received praise from local and national music journalists, who described it as 'a frantic frenzy of energy and melodies' (Glitzine) and 'a cult classic' (The Mag).
In October 2010 the band teamed up with Reading indie label Josaka to release their debut EP 'Start Fires'. The record saw the scratchy messiness replaced with a far more assured band letting the melodies shine through, combining mid eighties indie pop with a Bis style shouty bits. 'Start Fires' was released through all major digital download services and was picked up by several BBC DJs including Steve Lamacq and Tom Robinson who played tracks on their shows.
In Jan 2011 Secret Rivals signed to London indie label Kittiwake Records who will released the single 'Tonight Matthew' in April 2011. February saw the band interviewed by BBC Oxford Introducing, following which they were invited into the BBC 6Music studios for an interview with Tom Robinson in March. 'Tonight Matthew' was also picked up by Rasio 1 DJ Rob Da Bank who named the track his 'tune of the day' in Febuary 2011 and gave the band its first BBC Radio 1 air play in March,
The band continue to play regularly across the UK and have recently shared stages with the likes of The Chapman Family, La Faro and Wilder and are gearing up for the festival season with spots confirmed at Whycwood and Bestival 2011.
