I do know that there are better ways to handle this than pretending to do something that you'd never be allowed to do for real and I'll bet some of those kids are itchin' to put him to the test. I also think the teacher is more interested in being a campus celebrity (he did record this) than he is in being an example of leadership. A teacher needs to command respect but, not through fear.
I'll also bet the sledge hammer is not a permanent fixture in that room (duh!)... Our students aren't dumb and we need to respect their intelligence in order to gain their respect.
From the first day of class, my students know that their respect and attention is something I neither need nor demand - it is only theirs to give. I only require that they are not disruptive to others. However, I promise that if they choose to engage in my course, I will offer them MY time and attention as we sojourn together. Demanding that students bow to the authority of the "sage on the stage" is a dehumanizing approach to pedagogy that reflects the oppressive, right-handed power of the Pharisees.
