When traveling with Amtrak on the long distance trains plan your trip to arrive at least a day ahead of when you wish to arrive at your destination, if not more. Sometimes Amtrak runs very late and you will miss a connection. Remember you aren't flying and the long distance trains do run late.

While it costs more to ride a train with a sleeper accommodation, Amtrak provides the meals in the dining car. If you ride in coach you have to pay for your meals in the dining car. I welcome the privacy although its very modest, well cozy in size.
