@stephenhayesuk My farm is next to a sustainable micro-brewery, and we have been talking about just such a thing. The brewery wants to grow some of it's own specialty barley someday, and I offered to teach a scythe workshop to harvest it. You can guess how we would celebrate after a successful harvest.

Thanks for the sub, long live the scythe! I'm writing a novel about a post oil future with a scene in it about the whole community celebrating the barley mow as a gang of scythesmen slowly marches across the field singing their way towards the beer. I'd love to see such a sight, but doubt I will except in my imagination!

As per your question, this year I would love to see something on how to hay rack and some info about how you decide when to cut (time of year, weather). Most of all though, I would like to see how your whole farm fits together... ex. so you cut reed straw for bedding, is that reapplied to the field? How much hay do you cut and for how many animals? Thanks for the thorough videos.

Scythes work great on short grass. Take a look, I cut my lawn with one. Gets me some respect, plus it makes a nice sound so the neighbors like it when I cut my lawn for two reasons now.

Yes it can. It's actualy easier to mow young tender grass, than the big, almost mature, orchard grass that I'm mowing in this video. The key to success with a scythe is a sharp blade, good technique, and well designed equipment.

can a scythe cut short grass? i just want to know, please. can it cut grass, that's either 1/4 or 1/2 shin high. :-)
