that leak is the water exiting the water intake /pickup, those old motors cant use muffs and need to be in water up to the pump the water is supposed to discharge higher on those just below the cover

got the same motor I just got a 14 pitch prop from propco and i have an aluminum 14' mine seems to lack speed and higher rpms likes like you got yours going pretty fast, what is your setup ,

vortec48 is right, I have a 1970 electric shift 40 evinrude and it has to be submerged up to the collar/shroud just above the muffs due to the design of the lower unit water pickup. The water just pours out of the exhaust and never reaches the impeller otherwise.
