I always assumed Lake played the opening riff on the 13th and 14th frets, but watching the ELP 1992 Albert Hall video, it looks like he plays (on a 4-string) the upward part of riff at the 8th fret and the rest of it on the 14th. Which looks kinda like what you're doing.
