Part 1 - The Construction. The War of Independence Victory Column is located in Freedom Square, Tallinn, Estonia. It was opened on 23rd June 2009 as a memorial for those who fell during the Estonian War of Independence, through which the people of Estonia will be able to commemorate all those who had fought for freedom and independence.
The idea of creating a monument was conceived in 1919, before the end of the war. During the liberation war of 1918-1920 6,275 people were killed, and many more wounded. In 1936 a law was passed to establish nation-wide monument in commemoration of the Liberation War. Preparatory work was interrupted by the Second World War and subsequent Soviet annexation. After Estonia regained independence the question of establishing a nation-wide monument for the commemoration of the Liberation War was raised. In spring 2005, the Parliament of Estonian decided that a column of victory in memory of the War will be erected in Freedom Square in Tallinn.
The pillar is 23.5 meters high and consists of 143 specially designed and strengthened glass plates. The memorial incorporates the Cross of Liberty, Estonias most distinguished award established in 1919. The monument complex cost around 11 million $ dollars.

The military defense concept of Latvia is based upon the Swedish-Finnish model of a rapid response force composed of a mobilization base and a small group of career professionals. The armed forces consist of mobile riflemen, an air force, and a navy. Latvia cooperates with Estonia and Lithuania in the joint infantry battalion BALTBAT and naval squadron BALTRON which are available for peacekeeping operations.
Latvijas Republika is a North European Baltic country in European Union. It is bordered to the north by Estonia, to the south by Lithuania, and to the east both by Belarus and the Russian Federation.

Latvia proclaimed independence shortly after the end of WWI on November 18, 1918 which is the Independence Day in Latvia. The first major power to recognize Latvia's independence was the soviet Russian SFSR which relinquished authority over the Latvian nation and claims to Latvian territory once and for all times. On June 16, 1940, this promise was broken by the Soviets and the country was occupied by the Red Army.
On May 4, 1990, the Supreme Soviet of the Latvian SSR adopted the Declaration of the Restoration of Independence of the Republic of Latvia, subject to a transition period that came to an end with Latvian independence on August 21, 1991, after the failure of the August Putsch. The Saeima, Latvia's parliament, was again elected in 1993, and Russia completed its military withdrawal in 1994.
Latvia is a unitary democratic parliamentary republic and is divided into 26 districts. The capital and largest city is Riga. Latvia has been a member of the United Nations since 17 September 1991, of the European Union since 1 May 2004 and of NATO since 29 March 2004.

DDR alias Die Deutsche Demokratische Republik - a former country with one of the largest military forces in Central Europe till early 1990s - a Central European «держава». More commonly known as East Germany was a self-declared socialist state created in the Soviet Zone of occupied Germany and the Soviet sector of occupied Berlin which existed from 7 October 1949 until 3 October 1990.
Like all Soviet bloc countries, East Germany had its own armed forces, known as the Nationale Volksarmee with four branches of service. Since East Germany was at the frontline of the Cold War, the GDR's military was considered to be the most advanced in the whole Warsaw Pact, excluding the Soviet Union. It was battle ready at all times, ready to be mobilized in a future war with NATO.

In 1955, the Soviet Union declared that the Republic was fully sovereign. However, Soviet troops remained in GDR territory, based on the four-power Potsdam Agreement, while British, Canadian, French and American forces remained in the Federal Republic of Germany in the West. Berlin, completely surrounded by GDR territory, was similarly divided with British, French and U.S. garrisons in West Berlin and Soviet forces in East Berlin. Berlin in particular became the focal point of Cold War tensions. East Germany was a member of the Warsaw Pact and a close ally of the Soviet Union.
Following the initial opening of sections of the Berlin Wall on 9 November 1989, new elections were held on 18 March 1990, and the governing party, the Socialist Unity Party of Germany, lost its majority in the Volkskammer (the East German parliament) soon after. On 23 August, the Volkskammer decided that the Republic would recreate the five pre-war states (which had been dissolved in 1952), which would join the Federal Republic of Germany on 3 October 1990. As a result of the reunification on that date, the German Democratic Republic ceased to exist.
