Nevermind on the blast resistance. Brick, smoothstone, and cobblestone all have a blast resistance of 30, versus obsidian's 6000.

Go ahead and remove the half-blocks. Replace with cacti with one space between them. A cactus will kill spiders. BTW, you have to plant cacti on sand. Go ahead and get water to flow through a few 1-space gaps on each wall to the center of your safe zone. Bingo! Easy collection.
