Artist Statement for this heroic man(he lost his hand by grenade, then still called it in, his leg was broken also- I had from 9pm till noon the next day to finish it:
The Sculpture of Army Ranger Sgt. First Class Leroy Arthur Petry Commission My work explores the relationship between balances. What starts as a clarified vision, soon falls to the manifesto of power deconstructed, but in fragmented ashes; a tendril unearths to start anew. Influences are from sundry sources, including Machiavelli to Norman Rockwell and Howard Pyle for their storytelling through color and light play. A glimpse of the fragility and darkness of our existence, but a semblance of hope emerges from mans true soul and his faith in his kind is what I want to express through my form. The sculpture of Army Ranger Sgt. First Class Leroy Arthur Petry started as a work in appreciation to this man, who despite his casualty fell back on his training to make the call for his unit. The valor I hope to evince is his worn emotion, looking at his new obstacle as that; another obstacle that would not hinder him. He used a tourniquet and then proceeded to follow his orders. I wanted to portray on an elevated base and behind inadequate cover to highlight how alone he was in his sparse surroundings. His story is that he was looking at his now absent hand in wonderment. The movies were not "correct" in their portrayal. I used 22 gauge wire to make an armature of him sitting with reinforcements through the torso. Each arm is wired and made separately then blended in. I made the head separately so the firing process wouldn't singe the details and then attached it to a fired body, further curing it. The rock cover has an under structure of the same with foil filling it underneath (so it can be the same thickness) preventing cracking or splits with uneven clay distribution. I hope to relate the valor of Sgt. First Class Leroy Arthur Petry with this memorial to his time in the field when he put courageously his unit before himself showing the depth of true human compassion for his family and his team.

What a great time to the gray cold day it was. Buttered rum & wassail for everyone!
