If you want to care for the environment and the future of our planet, start seeing it as a living being and start seeing all the beings who dwell here as our close relatives.'Shamanism is a way of living that respects all life. It comes from an animistic way of seeing the world - an animist sees all beings (humans, animals, plants, rocks, waters, air, fire, sun, moon, stars... your car, your computer.. all things) as being with spirit and in some sense alive.
If you think this is 'new-age babble' - think again, it has been the generally held view for over 50,000 years... our Western 'rational' science based 'sensible' view that everything is dead and therefore can be disrespected and owned by man, is less than a few centuries old - and look where the last few centuries of 'dead-matter thinking' has led us.
Shamanism and animism are the oldest (and best) ways of understanding the world and our place in it. It is the foundation of every spiritual system and religion in the world. Hinduism, Judaeo/Christian/Islamism and Buddhism all have shamanic and animistic roots.
WHAT IS A SHAMAN?
A shaman is an animist, who not only understands that everything is alive and therefore should be treated with respect, but has also been trained in how to communicate with all these different parts of nature that we share our home with - so that we, as human beings can live in balance and dignity with them.
Shamans in one form or another occur on every part of the earth and in every culture and period of history.
Shamans are not - drug tripping, hippy, new-age healers.
Shamans are - 'sacred technicians' who mostly do not take drugs; keepers of tradition; holders of ancient wisdoms we in the West have mostly lost; workers with ways of healing different, but often just as, or more effective than modern Western medicine; sacred artists, dreamers, poets and mystics; helpers in the hunt and other physical aspects of life; keepers and maintainers of the relationships between the family of all life we, as human beings are part of.
SACRED HOOP MAGAZINE
Is a leading, full colour, quarterly magazine about shamanism and animism. It was first published in 1993, and is considered by many people to be the best magazine on the subject in the world.
It features articles on various aspects of shamanism and animism, many of which are designed for you to take some of these ancient ways of being into your own life here and now to make it richer and more balanced.
Our writers are all experts in their fields, and include some of the world's leading shamans and tribal keepers of wisdom, Western ecological mystics, healers and new thinkers.
The magazine is published in a paper and an electronic (pdf) format, and has subscribers in every region of the world.
