The MLI Mobile Guide Summer Experience gives young people the chance to learn about a specific place and then make use of presentation software and interactive mapmaking services to share their experiences in the context of that location. This summer, students in New York City visited the world-famous Bronx Zoo and made use of the latest geospatial features on Nokia mobile devices to create maps of their own that presented what they learned about the zoo and about the role of science and technology in this environment.
To develop this program, the MLI worked together with Fordham Universitys STEP program, the Social Science Research Council, and the Wildlife Conservation Society. The curriculum underlying this effort was developed with four partners the Bronx Zoo, the American Museum of Natural History, City Lore, and the Smithsonians Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum. The specialized expertise and institutional assets of these organizations resulted in the creation of a framework for learning that develops skills around the latest developments in zoology, ecology, digital media, community mapping, and other geospatial technologies.

At a time when North Korea was in the news because of Bill Clinton's dramatic visit to Pyongyang--the first high-level U.S. contact with North Korea in nearly a decade--SSRC communications intern Hannah Hammel spoke with SSRC program director Leon Sigal about the strategy he favors for normalizing relations with the so-called "axis of evil" power, Kim Jong-il's likely succession plan, and an up-to-date assessment of the food situation in that country. Sigal runs the SSRC's Northeast Asia Cooperative Security Project.

As New York commemorates Henry Hudson's momentous voyage and honors the past, present, and future of the mighty river that bears his name, SSRC communications director Mary-Lea Cox travels back in time to the landscape Hudson confronted 400 years ago, with the help of landscape ecologist Eric Sanderson, author of Mannahatta: A Natural History of New York City. In this episode of "Research Talks," they discuss Sanderson's research methods, his personal history as a transplant to NYC from Northern California, and his relationship with nature in the city, which, he says, is still around us. They go on to discuss what Manhattan's ecology might be like 400 years from now. Sanderson's next research project, "Manhattan 2409," is sponsored by the SSRC and the Van Alen Institute of New York.
