About Suicide Prevention Education Alliance of NEOhio
Since December 2000, Suicide Prevention Education Alliance (SPEA) has delivered its proven prevention education program, Recognizing Teen Depression and Preventing Suicide to 90,000 students in Northeast Ohio. SPEA instructors teach students how to identify friends who may be suffering from major depression and/or may be at risk of suicide; what to do and where to get help. Our objective is to cause at-risk students to seek the help of a mental health professional. Five per cent of the students who participate in our program seek the help of a mental health professional during the weeks following our program.
In addition, we have trained more than 5,000 physicians, school counselors, social workers, nurses, clergy, teachers, home health aides, law enforcement officers and parents in recognizing adolescent depression and suicide prevention.
