In this first book exposes briefly the poet the subject of the poem, which is the disobedience of man and his punishment.
Then presents the author of sin, the Serpent, or Satan rather than under the form of this reptile beguiled our first parents to take revenge of God, whose fearsome justice had thrown from the sky, throwing into the abyss with all its rebellion mates. After having dealt lightly of this, the poet goes on and represents Satan and his angels plunged into hell, which is not placed in the center of the world (because heaven and earth did not yet exist) but in a place of strange shadows, better known by the name of Chaos.
In this place are all immersed in a lake of fire, lightning injured and terrified. The prince of darkness recovers her senses and come to himself, speaks to Beelzebu, which remains in power and dignity, both start speaking to his unhappy fall. Satan awakens to his legions, emerging out of the flames, seeing their prodigious number, their order of battle and his top commanders, known as the idols known later in Canaan and neighboring countries.
The prince of the demons harangue, encourages with the hope of re-conquer the sky, and also speaks of a new world and a new creature wich should to exist a day (because some Fathers believe that the angels were created long before this visible world), proposes to examine in full council on meaning of a prophecy about the creation and determined what they should, in therefore try.
His supporters agree to it and built at a time a Pandemonium, or palace of Satan. The powers of hell meet him to deliver...

Those who do so, may remember, if the soporific liquid of this lake of not forget doesn´t hinders even more, that we raise our own momentum towards our native places and that, the decline and fall are contrary to our essence. When our proud enemy hasn´t sought too much to our shattered rear, insults and harassments through the abyss... who among yours hasn´t experienced how violent and laborious flight fell to us as low? The rise, it´s easy.

Go therefore, powerful thrones, which, though fallen, you are still terror of heaven; Go! to inquire what in our house (while this place is´t ) can better relieve this misery, and make more bearable the hell, if exists any means or some charm of to suspend or divert soothe the torments of this terrible mansion. Does not cease in your vigilance against an enemy that watches, while me -traveling through the remote beaches of the black desolation- I seek freedom for all. Nobody will take part with me in this endeavour.
